Belthangady CSR Bamboo Plantation Project

Belthangady CSR Bamboo Plantation Project

Funding Partner: Gland-Fosun Foundation (CSR of Gland Pharma Ltd., Hyderabad)
Implementation Agency: Bamboo Society of India (BSI)
MoU Signed: August 11, 2023

Project Objectives:

  • Develop a scalable bamboo-based livelihood model with assured markets
  • Promote sustainable agriculture and rural income generation
  • Reclaim degraded lands and improve soil health
  • Support carbon sequestration and eco-friendly practices
  • Create marketing channels and industry incubation

Project Location: Started in Belthangady (Dakshina Kannada), expanded to Puttur, Sullia, Moodbidri, and potentially Udupi & Karkala (Udupi District). The region’s high rainfall and climate ensure excellent bamboo growth, even without irrigation.

Progress and Impact: Bamboo seedlings were distributed free to farmers in 2023–24 and 2024–25. BSI provides technical support, and farmers receive cash incentives: ₹100 per surviving plant (Year 1), ₹50 (Year 2) which is paid directly to farmers bank accounts. Farmers are highly satisfied. The project is gaining popularity, with requests for expansion from neighbouring taluks.
